Naviera Chilena del Pacífico S.A. was authorized via Executive Decree N°5178 issued on June 30, 1948 with the objective of developing the maritime, fluvial, lacustrian and land transportation business.
In spite of the difficult post-war times, the shipping project initiated its activities with the acquisition of the "Don Thompson" steamship from the Compañía Carbonífera e Industrial de Lota coal company and began transporting that mine's coal along the Chilean coastline.
NACHIPA's first shipping vessel was baptized "Algarrobo", and with it the company got started in the tradition of naming all its ships after native Chilean trees.
In February 1951, the Board of Directors was informed that the company had been awarded a contract of afreightment for round trips between Chilean and Cuban ports. The northbound voyages contemplated carrying Chilean Nitrates for Corporación de Ventas de Salitre y Yodo (COVENSA), while the southbound voyages were committed with raw sugar consigned to the sugar refinery of Compañía Refinería de Azúcar de Viña del Mar (CRAV).
In October 1954, jointly with CCNI, they managed to secure their first crude oil transportation contract from Tierra del Fuego to Quintero, thus incorporating the Consorcio Naviero Petrolero Ltda. In May 1955 the agreement ended and the administration of the contract remained with CCNI.
In December 1956 the company acquired a 30% stake in Cía. Carbonífera Schwager S.A. also taking over the management of the ships owned by Naviera Coronel S.A. (NACOR). By November 1961, and after several merger attempts with that company, a new management services agreement is executed between NACHIPA and NACOR to operate their ships. In time, this agreement became a related company participation account; which is still in effect.
In January 1996 the company signed its first cellulose transportation contract to Argentina with Compañía Manufacturera de Papeles y Cartones (CMPC).
In March 1968 the company obtained the General Agency for Brazil's Compañía de Navegacao Lloyd Brasileiro.
By the late 1960's our company had already strengthened its presence as agent of ships with the representation in Chile for: Imparca Line, Rodson Shipping, Admanthos Shipping and Ciamar.
Subsequently, however, the company decided to focus solely on its own shipping business, abandoning all third-party ship agency business.
Over all this time, the company acquired new ships, contracted new clients and executed various contracts of afreightments, providing its services according to our industry's needs, all of which have made of NACHIPA the solid company with a promising outlook that it is today.
